BEDFORD, N. J. –A new study finds that the erectile dysfunction drugs Viagra and Cialis could be a significant health risk to older people who suffer from the condition.
“These drugs can have a significant effect on erectile function,” said Dr. Mark R. Hervey, director of the Urology Department at Mayo Clinic and director of the University of British Columbia’s Health and Aging Program. “In younger people, they are less likely to do well on these drugs, so these drugs are more likely to be used in older patients.”
Viagra, Cialis and other ED drugs such as Levitra are prescribed to men with erectile dysfunction to treat impotence. However, the drugs can have a huge impact on older people, and the researchers found that the drugs could also be a problem for people with the condition. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra are not approved for use in this population, and patients must have their prescription filled before their ED medication is available to them.
“This study confirms the importance of these drugs in older people,” said Hervey, adding that it’s important to remember that these medications can be harmful to older people. “These drugs should not be used by people with the condition, but they are safe to take by people who are older.”
A survey conducted at the University of British Columbia’s Health and Aging Program in February 2018 found that only 30 percent of the participants reported experiencing some kind of sexual dysfunction or problems with their erections. Those taking the drugs in question reported experiencing problems with their erections, such as flushing, nausea, pain and tiredness.
Although Viagra is a popular drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, many older people are not aware of its use in this area. So, the researchers asked participants to fill out a health questionnaire and then asked them to rate the severity of their sexual problems on a scale of 1 to 10. They then were asked to provide their answers to the survey.
“The results show that men who were taking the erectile dysfunction drugs for more than two years did not have significant improvement in sexual problems,” said Hervey. “These drugs can have a significant effect on erectile function, but in the vast majority of cases they do not cause a significant loss of sexual satisfaction.”
The researchers noted that the men who took these drugs were less likely to engage in sexual activity than the men who were not taking the drugs.
The researchers also noted that erectile dysfunction drugs can lead to other problems, such as depression, and that erectile dysfunction drugs should be avoided in these patients. However, they said that there is no proof that these drugs can increase sexual activity in the long term.
“In order to make sure that these drugs are safe and effective for the general population, it is important to know that the drugs are safe to take by older people,” said Hervey. “This research is the first study to demonstrate that these drugs can be harmful to older people with erectile dysfunction.”
“It is important to note that there is no scientific evidence to support that these drugs are safe to take,” he added.
