The new erectile dysfunction pill, called sildenafil, will be made by Eli Lilly today, the company said Tuesday.
The drug will cost Lilly $5.69 billion, up from $4.47 billion in 2013, it said. Sildenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis, which helps men get and keep an erection.
Sildenafil, the active ingredient in the new erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, is expected to become a top seller among American men by late next year, Lilly said.
The company is looking for new ways to improve its ability to quickly and efficiently treat erectile dysfunction, Lilly said.
In addition to sildenafil, the new pill will also be made easier to swallow and more convenient to use, Lilly said.
The new pill is called Revatio, and Lilly has already said it wants to make the same drug more widely available.
Lilly also said that sildenafil, which was once the main treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, will be available starting July 25. The drug will be available in generic form from Lilly's own chemical giant Pfizer, also known as Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
Revatio also is expected to become available in the United States in late May.
Lilly also said it would continue to make the pill more widely available to doctors and patients.
Lilly said Tuesday that the drug will begin selling its version of the drug on the Web in about 50 countries.In addition, the company said that a generic version of Revatio will be available as a generic drug in about 25 countries in the world.
Lilly said that the product will have a big market share in the United States and the United Kingdom, where it already sells its product.

We also examined the relationship between the dose of sildenafil used and its effect on sexual performance. This study was a multicenter, single-arm, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study in patients with PAH (N=12). The study was conducted at a single center. Participants were randomly assigned to sildenafil, placebo or a placebo-treated group in a blinded fashion. Patients had their baseline blood pressure (BP) at baseline. The primary end point was the change in sexual performance, defined as the ability to perform sexual intercourse with at least one partner, by the partner. The secondary end point was the change in the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score from baseline.
